for commissioned work depend on size and complexity. As a rule, an 11" X 14"
portrait of a single dog or cat with a plain background will cost $250. Price
will increase with size, complexity, or if more than one animal or pose are included
on the same painting. Call or e-mail me with details of what you have in mind for an exact quote for your particular painting. The paintings are done on Arches 140lb paper - they are not framed or matted. I use Schmincke professional quality watercolours, which are rated good or excellent as regards lightfastness and permanence. Paintings are shipped flat with a sturdy backing. The photos you send must be of good quality - if I can't work from them I will have to turn down the commission. For portraits of animals, include at least one close-up of the head, and one photo showing eye and coat colour accurately. Additional photos showing a specific pose or action you would like to see on the finished portraits may be required. For landscapes and buildings, it is usually best to take the photos early in the morning or late in the afternoon - bright noon light can make everything look flat and bleached out. If in doubt, it's better to send a number of photos - they will be returned with your finished painting. I don't need any one spectacular photo to work from, as long as all of the details I need to see are there on one or another. If you're not sure whether your photos are adequate, e-mail me and we can discuss it. If you live in the Barrie area, I will be happy to visit and take my own reference photos at no additional charge. All commissioned artwork is done on approval - after you send the photos, we will discuss exactly what you would like to see on the portrait before I start to paint. If you are not sure of the exact pose or composition you would like, one or several preliminary drawings may be made to help you chose. When the painting is finished, I will send you a colour photocopy or e-mail a JPG of the painting to you. If it meets your expectations, you purchase the painting, otherwise I will return your photos and you owe me nothing - however, in this case I do reserve the right to sell the painting elsewhere if I chose. In all cases, I reserve the right to use any painting in advertising or promotional material, such as this web site. If you are interested in one of the original pieces of art available for sale on this site, I would be happy to send you close up scans to show the details of the painting. In any case, if the painting does not meet your expectations, you may return it for a full refund (minus the shipping costs) within ten days of receiving it. Buying art over the internet requires a bit of a leap of faith - the monitor simply will not show every detail of the painting, nor will the colour be exact. I hope that by offering a money back guarantee if you are not satisfied, I can make it a little less scary to take the plunge and order an original piece of art.
